About the Mack LTL

This 1954 Mack LTL single axle tractor

exemplifies all the best of the West Coast Macks.

These trucks handled huge loads,

and had larger,

high-horsepower engines to match.

An added bonus was that these trucks

were very well-suited to the winding,

sometimes steep and sometimes treacherous mountain roads.

The B75 would replace the LTL by 1958

(two years after the LTL was retired),

but those who've driven both

like the larger and more comfortable cab

found on the LTL.

The LTL packed heavyweight performance

into a lighter package,

thanks to engine and cab mounts, supports, hubs,

brake shoes, air tanks, wheels,

and trans case being made of aluminum.

Mary Hitchings Mack Truck

Besides its construction and its Mack bulldog,

there's something else that makes this truck special:

it belonged to Mary Hitchings,

The Lumber Gal

(her CB call sign).

If the name doesn't ring a bell,

here's some background:

She earned her stripes hauling lumber

for the lumber yard she co-owned

with her husband Andrew.

Hitchings Lumber started with

"$40 and [a] little bitty truck."

For three decades, Mary Hitchings made the run

between Santa Rosa and Fort Bragg

daily six days a week,

clocking two million miles in the process.

The lumber yard had become an informal Mack museum

due in large part to the fifty Mack trucks

spread over the yard's acreage.

Since the Hitchings had no children,

those trucks would be sold at auction after her death.

This truck was bought at that auction

and shipped east for restoration.

Restoring a Classic Mack Truck

As you can tell from the photos,

this truck didn't start off

in the beautiful shape it's in now.

New Jersey truck restorer Mickey Delia estimates

he's put 1,400 hours and thousands of dollars of parts

into restoring this rig.

Wherever possible, this restoration is period-correct,

though in some cases OEM parts weren't available

and their replacements had to be hand-crafted

or improvised using a combination

of original components and custom fabrication.

Aside from the back of the cab and some rust spots

on the floor under the driver's seat,

this truck started off largely rust-free.

The cab back is rebuilt,

and the stress-cracked floor replaced

with quarter inch steel plate,

except for its wood section,

which was replaced with new marine plywood.

There's a new stainless steel dash and gauge board,

and all of the gauges now work.

The glass was all replaced

(with true tinted back and side glass),

as were the gaskets.

The doors work like new

thanks to restored mechanisms

and all window regulators having been greased and fixed.

The truck's gotten high-end leather seats with arm rests,

and the rugs and upholstery are all new.

Mack LTL Restoration

This truck's power train consists of

a 262 HP Cummins turbo diesel

and a five-speed transmission with three-speed auxiliary.

It comes with a period-correct oil bath air filter

and a Jake brake.

The wheels have been pulled and resealed.

The brake chambers and 30-30 spring brakes

on the rear brakes have been replaced.

The water pump was also resealed,

the regulator and generator replaced,

new batteries installed,

and the engine detailed.

The belts and water hoses have been changed out

and brand new 1940's-50's vintage headlight assemblies

have been installed.

The dazzling white paint that replaced

Mary Hitchings' trademark blue-and-white

is accented with ample stainless steel and chrome,

including a surgical stainless steel radiator

with a chrome top secured with all-stainless bolts.

The original (tall-eared) bulldog was rechromed

along with the air horn and original mirrors (

which now have stainless steel heads).

New parts were made when OEM versions couldn't be found.

Period correct shifting boots,

custom stainless steel bezels

for the shift and fuel throttle,

and new custom tanks fabricated to the original specs

were all made custom for this truck.

And since the exhaust systems on LTLs

tend to damage the cab over time

thanks to prolonged vibration,

this Mack's exhust system was not only overhauled,

but it also got new exhaust brackets

and a new mount that isolates it from the cab.

Your Chance to Buy A Classic Mack Truck

Mack is estimated to have built 2,009 LTL trucks,

and 100 or less ended up on the east coast.

This LTL is, as the old slogan goes,

"Built like a Mack Truck."

But thanks to Mickey,

it's been restored with all the love and respect that a classic

-- especially a classic with a bulldog on its hood --

deserves.
