Monster Pillar





A century after its founding,
Caterpillar is much more than just tractors.
The company has become known
for a wide variety of heavy-duty equipment,
from excavators to diesel engines and compressors.
The Caterpillar 231D LC excavator
is the very definition of "heavy machinery," and
exemplifies Caterpillar's ethic
of manufacturing heavy equipment
for the heaviest jobs.






If you needed proof why Caterpillar
is the world's largest heavy equipment manufacturer,
may we present Exhibit A:
should we call this Frankencrawler?
Or maybe just a "Monster Pillar."
No need to look for a jar of brains,
or to worry about this being
a hurriedly slapped-together
ill-stitched contraption.
This is actually a machine custom built by CAT
for pipe work
and mining applications.
Uniquely for Caterpillar,
this was something of a boutique item,
with only about 600 produced.
It combines the best of two CAT machines.
It inherits the 235 undercarriage,
which provides a very stable working platform,
and its boom also
carries over from the 235.
The stick, cab and body follow
the same design found on the 225,
and the sum of it carries the model number 231D LC.
The machine weighs 80,000 lbs,
and measures 35' 8"x11'9"x11'2" (LxWxH).
It's powered by a rebuilt 3208 CAT diesel.





Caterpillars have a unique place in history,
precisely because of machines like the 231D LC.

isn't afraid to break its own mold now and then,
in order to make sure you've got
