From its origins in the 1880's, the Mercedes-Benz name has become synonymous with innovation and thoughtful engineering. The carmaker's reputation certainly wasn't hurt in the least by the fact that alongside innovative designs, luxury has been built into nearly every vehicle the company built. The Mercedes-Benz W126, the successor to the earlier W116 line, was no exception. Benz's internal classification aside, this was known to the public as the "Sonderklasse," or Special Class, Mercedes, known better still as the S Class. Mercedes hoped for a worthy successor to its earlier line, and found that the W126 succeeded beyond their wildest expectations. It was manufactured between 1979 and 1991, with over 800,000 built.

In 1981, the SEC coupé version (SEC) was introduced. Some of its success no doubt came from the design team, which delivered a car that was more powerful, with improved aerodynamics and safety features. The aerodynamics in particular led not only to a more attractive car with sportier lines than were typical of Mercedes, but also one that was more spacious and fuel efficient while delivering a higher top speed than previous models.

This 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC features a 560 cubic inch (5.6L) V8 gas engine. It runs, idles, and drives very well, and its tires are roadworthy. The left side fender has been repaired. A small section of the headliner needs some TLC (it is hanging down a little bit right rear corner). The paint still shines very well but has some road chips, and a few small spots and blemishes.

For the better part of a century, Mercedes-Benz has been the company most of us associate with legendary German engineering. This '86 560 SEC not only proves why Benz cars stand the test of time, but has managed to stand the test of time itself. While it isn't in the shape it was when it first rolled off the line, it won't take much work to get it there. This is a chance for luxury and German engineering the affordable way, with a car whose best years are still ahead of it.
